29. Birch tree – Humility
In this lunar cycle, we are asked to awaken our fullest potential by standing tall and claiming our rightful space like birch trees do.
Birch trees are full of weathered scars and wounds but they are strong, sturdy and rooted. In the Sacred Medicine Oracle guidebook, author Asha Frost wrote that “shrinking, holding back, and not taking your rightful space is not true humility.” True humility is to illuminate the world with your full presence.
Presence is power. When we are fully present in the now, we can listen deeply to our intuition. Our intuition, or our soul’s voice, is here to guide us to live out our full potential.
But a lot of times we forget and turn to listen to the other voices, such as our inner critic, other people, or our society, telling us to shine and rise but not too much so we can still stay safe.
In the card message for the year 2024 blogCard Reading for the Year 2024, one of the key messages for this year is to step out of our comfort cave and to express our voice. The birch tree card for this lunar cycle is reminding us to stand tall, just like trees do, and to take up the space we need.
It also reminds us to stay rooted and grounded. How can we anchor our spiritual presence fully in this physical world? A lot of times people think of ascension or enlightenment as going upward only, but remember a tree can only grow taller and higher when the roots are growing deeper into the earth, or else the tree will become unstable and fall.
In order to grow tall, we must stay rooted. It’s important to keep on doing what grounds and nourishes us, just as a tree needs nutrients and water to stay alive.
Sometimes we may encounter people or situations that make us feel small, and we may start to question our own abilities and doubt ourselves. Though it is important to listen to others, we also need to use our intuition and discernment to what feels right and only take heart to words that ring true to us.
Take these situations as learning opportunities, and ask yourself with curiosity of what you can learn from this.
We all have limitless potential to shine our light. And it doesn’t have to be grand. A small gesture such as a simple thank you or a smile can make someone else’s day.
We are all part of this magnificent creation in the Universe, and we are all unique and beautiful in our own way just like trees are. It’s time to be yourself and no one else.

I recognize that my interpretation of the cards is largely based on reflections of my personal life experience and you may or may not resonate with what I share. I find that sometimes by sharing what’s going on in my life, others may find that they are going through something similar in their lives. It’s important to know that you are not going through this journey of life alone.
I highly encourage you to look at the cards as well and feel into the messages and energies of the cards yourself.
Read the messages and notice what sensations come up. Do you feel light or tense? Look at the images of the cards, and notice what draws your gaze. What thoughts and feelings arise? Do you like or dislike the card, or certain elements in the image of the card? Why is that and what does it remind you of?
